Fuel pumps are an important part of the automotive parts industry. They are responsible for pumping fuel from the fuel tank and pressurizing it before delivering it to the engine's fuel injection system. There are two main types of fuel pumps: electric fuel pumps and mechanical fuel pumps.
The main difference between electric and mechanical fuel pumps is how they are driven and where they are installed.
Drive mode: Electric fuel pumps are driven by electricity and can operate independently, regardless of the engine state. This means that even if the engine is not started, the electric fuel pump can work and provide fuel to the engine. In contrast, mechanical fuel pumps are usually driven by the engine and require the engine to be started or running before they can start delivering fuel.
Installation location: The installation location of electric fuel pumps is more flexible and can be installed away from the engine, avoiding the heat generated by the engine causing steam to be generated inside the oil pump, thereby reducing the risk of air lock. Mechanical fuel pumps are usually installed near the engine and are directly affected by the engine heat.
Reliability: Since electric fuel pumps are not affected by the engine state, they are generally superior to mechanical fuel pumps in terms of reliability and control of providing fuel. In addition, the design of electric fuel pumps also provides better cooling and noise reduction.
So modern vehicles often use electric fuel pumps because they offer better control and reliability. Compared with mechanical fuel pumps, they have obvious advantages in reliability and control.
